This is, no doubt the toughest decision after your examinations.. I've been doing a research on this topic for quite a while now. So lets not waste any more time on nonsense introductions and useless talks. Let's just come to the point.
Students now a days are blindly following, not exploring! That's the problem. Its sad that the cream students of the country are not confident about their interests.. People posting here and there like what are the best options for me and I am like what the hell dude! Stop asking all these nonsense questions. Yeah, you may have a doubt when you are not getting your desired branch. The right way is to first of all talk to yourself and decide what interests you. Today everyone wants computer science. Ask yourself, is this your real interest or you are choosing it just because of high packages and big companies!
There are very few people who pursue their true interest and those are the happiest people.. Remember YOU LEARN SOMETHING BEST WHEN IT IS OUT OF CURIOSITY!

Its not only about cs, its about following. Remember that there is no limit to the amount of success you can achieve in the area of your interest.. Also since this is the decision for the lifetime, you have to think it that way. You'll feel like heaven for the rest of your life if you make your passion, your career!
Let me give you an example: Imagine three guys Amar, Akbar and Anthony.
Amar is passionate about cs, Akbar just loves physics and Anthony is fascinated by biotechnology..
Case 1: All three go for their interest.. Amar invents a new machine code and is now earning a lot..
Akbar becomes one of the best physicist in the country who is in great demand in India as well as abroad for lectures. And Anthony develops new technology to treat cancer cells and have a patent, sells it for thousands of dollars.. Few years after graduating, all are very happy with their lives, salary may be a little up-down, but that doesn't really matter. All are successful..
Case 2: All three go for cs.. As it was destined, Amar was bound to succeed, and he is the one to inspire everyone about cs.. Akbar and Anthony try their best to develop interest in cs, but simply fail and eventually realize it's just not coming from deep within. They may manage to get a well paying job (although it's difficult), but doing something they didn't wanted is like being a millionaire who does not have good health.
So, it's just not about any specific branch that I'm talking about. Just keep aside placements, scope, reputation etc etc and ask yourself, what's that one thing that fascinated you since childhood. See, that interest is unconditional and true. Because you din't know this JEE, package and all then.. Choose something so that you never have to WORK ever in your life. Like in case 2 above, Akbar and Anthony would work their entire lives now whereas in case 1, all were enjoying.. There's a difference.
So I hope you get the point overall.. For a little (just a little)help, you can read below and decide yourself.
Now a total different case: Those who just have no idea as to what fascinates them, then I can help you choosing a branch.. These people can ask questions regarding comparison of two random branches..
According to your ranks choose the best you can get according to the preferences we'll decide further in this post.
So first thing, since you have no specific interest in anything, please don't go for branches like BS/MS in economics, physics, mathematics, chemistry etc etc and NEVER take a risk of choosing unconventional branch just because it sounds good and have one guy with a package of 40-50 lakhs. Remember, that guy is the Amar of that branch and these risks are to taken by guys who have personal interest in it because eventually they can only succeed in it.
You go the conventional way. You don't know anything, follow this order -
NEW IIT'S vs OLD IIT'S :
This is a pretty frequent question. But I can share my views : If you are very interested in something and are unable to get it in old IIT's, you can definitely opt it in IIT Mandi, Hyderabad, Patna, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar and Ropar. You can try your luck in everything and plus lot of efforts are being made to make these IIT's world class which they definitely will. The thing is you are looking at 2014.. Instead look at your graduation year and I bet the situation will be much better than you can imagine.. (I won't prefer Indore, Bhubaneshwar and ISM Dhanbad.)
BUT... If you have very little interest but not that much, ignore it and undoubtedly choose it in NIT's or BITS. Or compromise it with a branch in old IIT's. You surely will not regret it.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Note :- DON'T RUN AFTER THE BRANCHES THAT HAVE HEFTY PACKAGES..
Yeah, that's right.. A US posting for $1,00,000 is the same as a domestic salary package of 18 - 20 lacs. Actually it's all so misleading. Don't look at those packages with Indian perspective, it's just the overhyped by media.. And no matter what, if you have interest in your branch, 2-3 years later it's all the same for everyone whether cs or chemical.. All you need is to be a pro at what you do.. That's it. So package should be the later factor to be considered. Believe me, it really doesn't matter..
I may have missed many things but you can anytime ask your queries in the comments.. I'll try to help you to the best of my knowledge..

my jee rank is 2042(obc)....whether i shud go for chem at IIT-hyderabad/gandhinagar or app maths at IIT-roorkee ........OR ece/ee/MnC @ISM or CS at nits.......or any other suggestion...............(i got 284 in bits....) i hv no specific interests ......plz reply.......
ReplyDeletego for dual degree bits goa.. best and most flexible option..
DeleteHi!
DeleteMy JEE Advanced AIR :6823,and i am from the category who does not have any specific interest........so which is going to be best choice for me???
ReplyDeletegeophysical/ geological technology at iit- roorkee... past 2 years superb placements!
Deletewhat about1) applied geology from kharagpur
Delete2) chemistry from kharagpur
3)process engg. with mba from roorkee 4)evironmental,5)mineral,6)mining,7)mining machinery,8)maths and computing all from dhanbad and similar branches from iit varanasi........
Dhanbad has only one good branch- mining! so do it if u r interested otherwise take applied geo @ kgp and after that prefer bhu courses..
DeleteJee Mains -210
ReplyDeleteHsc(mahrashtra)-90.62%...also got a certificate of top 1%of Hsc board
Bitsat-293
Jee adv-13552
I dont know about my interests but im sure its not electronics/mechanical/electrical
So apart from that open to all
Jee mains expected rank 3-4k
Go for nit trichy/warangal civil or bits goa dual degree economics+ cs.. these r ur best options!!
DeleteYa even i thot so...dual degree eco+cs is a great option
DeleteIs it safe but?i may not land up with cs
you can! it's not difficult.. just attend classes and it'll be smooth! finance + it sector is what u'll be exposed to!
Deleteyou said you dont prefer iit indore. why so? Is iit jodhpur/mandi better than indore?
ReplyDeleteDue to the sad condition of politics in madhya pradesh (i am from mp!). It will develop but it'll be too late for u..mandi is way better!
DeleteMy rank is 2033.. Should I prefer mathematics and computing at IIT kanpur 4 years BS or IIT kgp 5 years integrated MSc course..??
ReplyDeleteGo for kanpur.. reason is u can do ms from us or any other place afterwards, and in the 4 years u'll have an idea that u should go for further studies or not.. Kanpur bs surely!
Deleteshould i prefer meta at IIT-BHU or IIT-Roorkee?
ReplyDeleteBoth are good, but I'd suggest u go for roorkee, coz being in between smart people matters alot! plus the culture of iit-r is also great!
DeleteWhat about Maths and Computing at ISM : should i prefer it over meta at IIT-BHU or IIT-Roorkee ?
DeleteI am a bit hesitant to suggest u ism! take mnc @ ism only if it fascinates u otherwise not! ism is good for mining only!
DeleteI am confused among IITG IITK IITBHU MnC or MnSC.. Which one will be best for me..? Is MnSC more difficult as compared to MnC ? I scored 66 in Maths.. Am I able to complete the course nicely? Is Bsc branch changable into Btech at IITK?
ReplyDeleteMnC at BHU is better among these! MnSC is 90% math oriented and very less cs related!
DeleteAmongst these which has better placements option ? Since you are studying at IITG will you recommend it?
ReplyDeletemnc at g is equivalent to mnc at bhu.. u can choose any.. but i'll recommend bhu mnc!
DeleteIs MnC at BHU and IITG same?? I mean year wise..
Deleteno bhu is 5 year while iit g is 4 year.. take admission acc to ur interest! whethet u want to go for masters or stick to b tech! oppurtunities r same..
DeleteI am very much interested in robotics, electrical circuits and semiconductors. Should i opt for roorkee electrical or guwahati electronics. I live in delhi and roorke is close . This does matter to me . kindly advise ( AIR-1498)
ReplyDeleteIn your case nothing will be much better than roorkee electrical! definitely go for it..
DeleteJEE ADV AIR - 3814
ReplyDeleteBITSAT score - 324
JEe mains - 216
12th % - 92
Please suggest best option for me. According to last year adv cut off list, I may get chemical in bhu and guwahati, meta in kgp, iitr, bhu. I may also get cs in BITS goa and hyderabad and eco. in pilani.
best option would be the branch of ur interest in bits!!
DeleteJust in a bit confusion regarding the priority order. Please help Frost. I have some equal interest in coding and mechanics. But I am a little more attracted towards electronic gadgets. So what should be my priority order between Mech-Roorkee, Electrical-Roorkee and Electronic-BHU?
ReplyDeleteElectrical Roorkee will be best for u.. gadgets+mechanics+programming - done! u get it all..
DeleteHow is petroleum engg @ISM.?Should i go for it?
ReplyDeletepetroleum is not that good (ok) in ism.. mining is good in ism and petroleum is good in rajiv gandhi institute of petroleum tech in rae bareli, up! they take from adv ranks!
DeleteJee mains- 154
ReplyDeleteboards-93%
advanc-16462
I js prefer msti nd ol...bt at d sme tym dun want to compromise with studies...bcoz of my bad company I js didn't able to score good...iit xam didn't seems typical to me...bt I don't know what happened...ol went wrong...
should I go for a drop???
If no then according to my marks which best college should I go for?
right now u'll get nothing! take a drop if u have the guts to leave that bad company and a dedication to clear JEE for a very strong reason.. taking a drop without a reason is useless!
