Should I take a drop to prepare for JEE!!

Well this post is for the ones' who are done with their boards, JEE and any other examinations. (If you haven't, then please get out! This post is not meant for you!)
Since you are reading this, it is quite obvious that your exams didn't go well.. And so, now you are thinking whether to take a drop or not. I know that you will get all types of diplomatic answers which have no use. I am gonna answer this my way! Also, I don't think any topper or teacher can answer this the way I can, because I've EXPERIENCED it. (If you don't know, I am a dropper who cleared JEE in second attempt)
So coming back to the question, should you take a drop or not! Actually you know the answer and what i'll do is basically dig it out! There are a lot of factors but today I'm going to cover every single one to help you decide right now!

This post is meant for three types of students:
[i] Those who have done nothing in 11th and 12th (I belonged to this category!)
[ii] Those who have done very well but JUST missed a bit.
[iii] Those who were neither good nor bad in their 11th and 12th.
I'll cover everything separately.. So sit back and read nicely!

BUT FIRST, SOMETHING THAT YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW :

It's not going to be easy.. Nothing is! You might face criticism for any of your decision, whether you take a drop or not. If you go for a drop, remember that your drop year may be worse than hell or better than heaven. It's up to you what you get out of it. The biggest factor is dedication+motivation!
As long as you have it, nothing's gonna come in your way. But that's the toughest job as well - sustaining it.. For the first few days, you'll be highly determined and motivated, planning all sorts of things, dreaming about top rank and what not.. But all that is pseudo! False.. After sometime you'll notice things becoming worse and depression taking control. I am not trying to scare anyone. It's the reality and I've faced it all.
So basically it's your motivation vs your weaknesses.. I'll discuss down whether you should take a drop or not, but whatever you do, make this decision the best decision of your life. Because this one year may either make you or break you.. (literally!)

#1  FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DONE NOTHING IN 11th AND 12th :

If you had all the relevant resources, knowledge, teachers, books etc in your 11th and 12th and you owe your poor performance to your carelessness, laziness and other bad habits then please don't think of dropping an year. You may say that you are now a better person and are willing to work hard but all that won't work. Trust me. Join the best college that you can get and work hard there in your branch. You will succeed eventually. And in one special case when something big has happened that you are changed drastically and you are dead sure of giving your ALL, no matter what then not even God can stop you from dropping a year! Go for it.. Otherwise not.. Even if you have 1% doubt, don't go for it..
And for the guys, who were unaware about the tools and techniques, resources and knowledge of JEE, and now they do and are willing to give a final try, then just do it.. Don't listen to others. Ask yourself that now when you know what it takes, are you ready to do it? If yes, go for it.

#2  FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DONE VERY WELL, BUT JUST MISSED A BIT :

I would strongly suggest you against taking a drop. Yes, you read it right.. No!! Don't go for a drop. The main reason is improvement.. There are a VERY FEW chances that you will improve your rank with a drastic difference. Usually these people end up doing similar performance next year too. Take the best college that you can get with your rank, and keep up the dedication.. And believe me, you'll be as par any successful candidate after you pass out. You have talent and you don't need to show it once again. Utilize it and avoid wasting one extra year.

#3  FOR THOSE WHO WERE NEITHER GOOD NOR BAD DURING THEIR 11th AND 12th :

For you people, it's a real difficult question.. But after all, like I've said before your dedication and motivation is the most vital thing.. Your heart would definitely say that Yes!! You can do it.. Everyone's heart says that.. But you listen to your brain.. Neither get overconfident nor feel inferior. You know your weakness and strengths better than anyone else.. Consider them all. And then the decision that your brain takes, will be the most appropriate one. You have a fair chance of clearing JEE! 1-2 % doubt can be ignored if you decide to take a drop. But if are not willing, NEVER DO IT for the sake of others.

  • FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE A DROP  :
Guys!! Like I said before, work real hard to make this the best decision of your life. Ignore the pessimists, critics and pretty much everyone trying to make you feel low! Just wait.. Your time will come.
And please do the following and you'll be an under 500 AIR candidate for sure.
Delete your facebook id right away no matter what, break your simcard in two pieces and keep away your smartphone for one year. Use home landline or parents' phone. Avoid internet no matter how important it seems.. (Exceptions can be like 10 min a day). It really is of no use and you will end up regretting wasting your time. Cut off all contacts and communications with friends, relatives and pretty much everyone and don't care about what they'll think because after one year if you succeed, all these people would die to have a glimpse of you!! This one year is only for you and your books! Explore yourself, stay fit and work DAMN hard..
(and DO read about the tools and techniques here and then and now visit here.

  1. I have read your blog and I find it really helpful and interesting. I want to ask you what you think I should do as I am really confuse. I scored 130 in mains, 105 in advance, 77% in boards, 240 in bitsat, 4200 rank in ipu cet. My parents want me to go to ipu as I can get admission in top ip colleges like bhartiya vidyapeeth and maharaja agrasen though I dont want to do so. Its not that they arent good or anything, my friend and class topper with 96% in boards scored is going to one of them colleges. The thing is I have an ego problem. In 11th class I was in 2nd top batch(out of 13) at fiitjee punjabi bagh and was pretty confident that i would go to iit. But in 12th, I lost it all, Hardly passed in school exams.. Started smoking, drinking, taking drugs, talking to my gf all day and night(even in boards).. basically everything except studying. I dont understand how this all happened. Somwhere on the inside I thought I would get respectable marks but hell. Now facing the reality I am dead scared. My parents have lost faith in me seeing everybody scoring 95% in boards and me just 77... They are thinking that my performance may become really poor if I drop. If I drop I will have to give boards again to make it to top 20 percentile. My parents have put this condition in front of me that I will have to use SC certificate if I drop which I had avoided this time because I think I am capable enough to get into IIT without certificate. What do you think I should do. I am definitely not among those students who can score in boards but I know I can manage 90%. Also I am ready to give everything up - phone, fb, gf, friends. I mean everything to get into IITs

    1. Hi Rohit! The last line of your comment is the most important one! Leaving everything.. 99.999% of people would fail in that. Drop only if you are dead sure of leaving everything because as your year will start, all these thing will attract you 10x. Using SC certificate is of no harm! I'd say you take admission in the ipu college and work hard there and if u think u r in the left 0.0001%, go for a drop!
      Good luck with your decision.

  2. He
I needed a bit of advice regarding my current scenario. I got a rank of 8143 this time around. I had done around 65% of the syllabus and I think this is my primary shortcoming. I was in an ISC affiliated school and the lack of it being streamlined with JEE along with extra effort required in areas such as English was one reason why I couldn't devote more time to JEE. I also have a habit of studying topics at my own pace which isn't how it should have been done. I'll also admit that I had lost some focus during segments here and there which should not have happened.
    Anyways...
Do you think taking a drop is a smart move?
Should I move to kota or is Delhi NCR alright?
What is the success rate of droppers?

    Looking forward to your view!
    Thanks.

    1. hey Sid..
Success rate of droppers is low to be honest! It seems like you have the ability to succeed as I can figure out. Go for a drop! Don't move to Kota and prepare from where you are, joining a good local dropper batch.

  3. i have a score of 136 in jee advance(rank15064) and 154 in mains.I was confident abt scoring above 250 in jee mains but in messed the paper because it was more calculative and less conceptual compared to last year main(this is wat i feel ) .I had done terrible calculation mistake in the paper as result almost half of question that i attempted went wrong and i had attempted around 70+ question. Jee advance i messed up because of the multiple correct question.in boards my score was 91.6 (isc) .i feel that i got less time to master ever topic because of college.i am confused should i take drop or not.

    1. Things are not always as you expect them to be. Hope for the best but always be prepared for the worst.. Drop only if you are sure of your weaknesses and strengths. It's not the time to experiment. Choose wisely and if you drop don't try to imagine what type of paper is gonna come, instead prepare for anything and everything!

    1. If you've identified your weaknesses and strengths upto 80%, if you can keep away distractions - go for a drop otherwise if you have even 10% doubt and 90% confidence, go for bits goa dual.. That'll be the best option..!

    1. Believe me. Take the best you are getting. You seem to be pumped up. Use that energy to improve your skills in college. This will take you even ahead of most candidates in life. After all success in life matters, not in an exam.

I did poorly in my JEE too, but now I'm lot more succesful than any of my IITian friennds. Put your efforts at the right place annd you will see the results.

Read some good books. Follow early to bed, early to rise policy. Inculcate self control. Find a source of REGULAR MOTIVATION.
Be determined. Work Hard. Work Smart.

May you be successful in life.

  14. JEE is not a cup of tea. And if you need to get into reputed and top engineering colleges like IIT. IITians pace is the place to get the required knowledge and guidance to crack the entrance exams.
